When John Bayley first met Iris Murdoch, he had to make several
adjustments to his views on love, but his patience and devotion were
worthwhile, as it permitted their love to grow beyond that which she
had experienced with her numerous other suitors. All their lives
together, the two writers remained as close-knit couple, even when
Alzheimer's began taking over Iris' mind, forcing John to face a whole
new set of challenges. Iris passed away in 1999.
